By the end of the 1990s, in line with global trends
toward accessibility and inclusion in audiovisual media,
the Deaf community in Argentina began to actively advocate
for the implementation of closed captioning on national television.
At that time, taking on this project represented a significant challenge
for the closed captioning system to be successfully implemented,
three essential conditions had to be met:
First, television broadcasters needed to be willing
to invest in significant technological upgrades.
Second, television manufacturers had to produce models
that were compatible with the captioning system.
And third, it was necessary to have trained technical professionals capable of supporting and maintaining the system.
Pilar García and Patricia González
were involved in the closed captions project,
taking on various technical assistance and consulting roles.
Some time later, Juan Suárez Santiago joined the team,
and together they succeeded in establishing themselves
as a company providing accessibility services in audiovisual media,
gradually incorporating additional services over the following years.
In 2004, Pilar García, Patricia González,
and Juan Suárez Santiago, who had built
a shared background in the field of accessibility,
establish Caption Group.
The company was created with the aim of advancing
the development of accessibility tools and services.
Caption Group provides consulting and advisory services
on accessibility-related matters
for both companies and public institutions.
It has also strengthened its ties with organizations
linked to disability, leading to the launch of new services:
Audio description for audiovisual productions,
Argentine Sign Language (LSA), consulting in plain language,
and, finally, a comprehensive service
for the Accessible Theaters project
(including consulting and the production
of audio description and subtitles for theater performances).
In 2020, Caption Group took things a step further,
launching its live subtitling and translation service
for streaming platforms — a success from day one.
We share our story because recounting this long journey
is a way to demonstrate the values that underpin
our commitment to every task we undertake.
